This is an article I wrote for Dan Treier’s 2017 revision of the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology. It runs a little over 3,000 words. The original EDT, while excellent in many ways, lacked an entry on this major topic, so the invitation to write on it for a reference work felt like the chance to do something definitive.
