A scene from the Leben der heiligen Altväter (1482)
John Wesley’s A Christian Library
This is a resource page for those who want to read and study John Wesley’s thirty-volume, fifteen-thousand-page series called A Christian Library: Consisting of Extracts from and Abridgments of the Choicest Pieces of Practical Divinity That Have Been Published in the English Tongue (reprinted edition, 1819-1826).
Below are links to individual pages dedicated to each of the thirty volumes. On those volume-pages are pdfs of the actual volumes to view or download; tables of contents; and a “Description & Discussion” section where I provide information and analysis.
The purpose of this resource project is to provide the basic tools for people to read and study John Wesley’s ambitious editorial project, A Christian Library. Until now, these have not been easy volumes to find online or to make sense of! Along the way, I also develop my own interpretation of what Wesley attempted and accomplished, and I share some notes about points of interest. But the best way to think of this site is as a public tool for others to do their own reading and work.
For a fuller account of what Wesley was up to with his Christian Library project, see this essay, with an annotated bibliography for further research.
For information about the original fifty-volume edition of A Christian Library (1749-1755), see this page, with links to the original fifty volumes.
